A beloved and distinguished physician, wife, mother and humanitarian, Dr. Stavroula Angelakos-Gabriel has stood out as one of Greece's many gifts to America.
The third of seven children, she was born and raised in Petrina, a small but significant village in the Laconian region of Greece during the difficult years of WW II and the civil war that followed. From an early age, she excelled in the sciences while always while always expressing a unique compassion for her fellow man. While her family struggled to build a new life in the United States, Stavroula remaned alone in Greece, where in 1964, she earned her medical degree from the University of Athens, guided by the inspiration and vision of her father, Demetrios N. Angelakos.
Her destiny was to unfold in our great land, where in spite of her difficulties with the English language, she would further her medical education and serve as a role model to younger Greek women, who at the time were not encouraged to aspire to higher education. While in her residency, she married her sweet heart, Dr. Michael Gabriel and found her life's greatest satisfaction in the nuturing of their children Demetrios, Anna and Michael.
Dr. Angelakos-Gabriel's husband, Dr. Michael Gabriel is the founder of Gabriel Pediatrics, with comprehensive medical centers in both Brooklyn and Staten Island, NY. Their two sons, Demetrios and Michael followed in their parent's footsteps and also became physicians.
Dr. Angelakos-Gabriel was the recipient of many awards, ciatations and recognitions for her selfless hard work and achievements throughout her lifetime. One of her notable causes was founding the Incurable Illness Foundation and serving as it's first President.
Dr. Angelakos-Gabriel passed away in November of 1994. Her legacy of community service and devotion to caring for others will continue on through the Foundation for the next generation.
